The Olympics has included two styles of wrestling: Greco-Roman and freestyle. Greco-Roman wrestling disallows the use of grabbing the legs and is built around upper-body throws. In contrast, freestyle wrestling contains all techniques available and generally is considered the international form of wrestling.
With its worldwide adoption, wrestling has provided a base for mixed martial arts for many successful fighters from many countries. The ability of wrestlers to control the range at which the fight takes place, be it standing, clinching, or on the ground, gives them a substantial competitive advantage. It was even included in the ancient Olympics in 708 BC and has been a popular combat sport and Mixed Martial Art discipline ever since. Its popularity as a sport persists and continues to grow, with it being the basis for many different martial arts disciplines.
Wrestling utilizes a ranking system that uses belts to determine a fighter's skill level. The clear-cut belt system allows a wrestler to see they can progress and continue to learn. Wrestling is also one of the core pillars of Alta's MMA training!
