Martial Arts history dates back centuries traditionally being a form of physical and mental pursuit reserved for men. However, the history of women in martial arts dates back over two thousand years to ancient China. Women have fought against societal norms to gain respect and practice the many forms of martial arts. Today, women are celebrated as powerful athletes who have the ability to compete and entertain on the world stage.
Women have been involved in martial arts throughout history, having faced resistance from male-dominated systems. Martial arts were originally developed as a tool used in battle and combat, specifically to be trained by men. Similar to many other sports, women have had to break this barrier to entry and the stereotype that only men can participate.
Women have been influential figures within the formation of martial arts disciplines particularly in Asia, using it to showcase their physical and mental strength. Initially women were excluded from all martial arts training. When they were able to participate it was on a separate mat from that of the men training, who were seen to have higher authority.
Each discipline has its own unique history in relation to women’s participation with some being more inclusive than others. Wing Chun was created by Ng Miu, a Chinese woman, who’s family had roots in the creation of the traditional Kung Fu. Women were also involved during the Edo period in Japan, as samurai’s being trained in martial arts and fighting alongside men in battles. Women have become gradually more involved in marital arts with many creating careers showcasing their talents on the global stage.
Women’s involvement in martial arts continues to grow as more women recognize the benefits of training. Along with the physical benefits of training including strength, flexibility and coordination, martial arts can provide significant mental health benefits. Through mindfulness practices and body awareness, women can improve their overall well-being.
