Boxing is one of the more recognisable combat sports, being used in many generalised fitness training programs as a form of cardio. Introduced into the Olympics in 1904, Boxing has been a popular discipline amongst both audiences and competitors for many years, growing with its inclusion in the UFC.
Competitive boxing fights are more controlled than other Mixed Martial Arts disciplines as opponents must obey strict rules about technique and equipment requirements such as wearing gloves. Unlike other forms of combat sports boxing fighters are only permitted to use their hands, with participants not being able to use kicking or takedowns and must only punch above the waist.
To be successful in training boxing it is important to understand that footwork and correct technique is equally as important as power and upper body strength. Our trainalta partner coaches believe that it is important to vary routine and include a mixture of drills, strength training and interval training.
Boxing can be trained in a range of ways including:
Shadow boxing
Punching Bag
Partner Work e.g. hitting pads or mitts
Strength and conditioning
We recommend starting by slowly building your fitness and working on specific techniques for both striking and footwork. This will allow you to correctly build your form on the basis of technique and improve your long-term training.
Boxing is an excellent way to stay in shape as it not only works your upper body but also enhances your overall fitness and cardiovascular endurance.
Boxing is an effective way to get fit and healthy as it's easy to incorporate into your everyday workout routine. Unlike other combat sports boxing can be trained both individually and with a partner using boxing pads and bags. Boxing allows you to train more than just your upper body and utilizes core muscular groups throughout the body.
Due to the reliance on stability and coordination, boxing trains both your physical and mental health. Muscles from your abdomen and legs are used as a base to both keep your frame stable, and supply force behind the punches that are thrown from your upper body.
