What were you fighting for? What was your ‘why’?

"I applied for the Warrior Training program the night before the program started. I was looking for something to challenge myself and distract me from the current state the world is in. My mental health was taking a knock throughout the endless wave of lockdowns and I was very restricted in what I could do. I found this program and decided to dive head first into training 5 mornings a week, which quickly became twice a day for the duration of the program, mornings and evenings weight training in the gym all the while working Monday to Friday. It was great to get away from my thoughts and get focused again."

What did you get out of the program physically?

"I started the program in decent shape, I had military training prior to Warrior Training which was fairly strenuous in itself. My challenge was more mental rather than physical. I did notice a lot of changes physically though, I was leaner and knowing I had a fight at the end made me really change up my diet to the healthiest I’ve ever been. I didn’t want to have any regrets. I noticed an increase in energy from changing my diet."

What were some of the mental and emotional outcomes you experienced?

"The mental side of the program was definitely a huge factor in why I applied. Physical exercise is undeniably good for mental health and I knew I needed that change. Throughout the program I was steadily gaining confidence in myself from the skills I was learning and the transformation in myself physically."

What did you learn about yourself?

"I learned that I can get through something as physically and mentally demanding as something like this even with anxiety. I may not have gotten the win on the night but I definitely beat a lot of mental obstacles along the way and that has reassured me for my life going forward."

Did Warrior Training lead to any long term changes in your life, and if so what were they?

"Before starting this program I was fairly lost in my life. I was building my career and cv but that was it. I didn’t have much interest or passion for anything before. After doing this I became a member of SBG Charlestown and found a passion for ju-jitsu. This is what’s going to keep me focused and mentally healthy going forward and I’m grateful for that, and knowing I had the courage to step into the cage will stay with me for life."

What would you say to someone thinking about starting the Warrior Training Program?

"Anyone can do this, as long as you trust the process. Just show up each day and you’ll realise it was one of the best decisions you’ve made in life so far. The changes are only positive. There is no down side."
